Anatomical Terminology.
The anatomical terminologies are as follows.
a) Anterior or Ventral:- The terms Anterior or Ventral means front side of the body.
b) Posterior or Dorsal:- The term posterior or Dorsal means back side of the body.
c) Superior or Cranial:– The term superior or Cranial means towards the head side.
d) Inferior or caudal:– The term inferior or caudal means towards the feet side.
e) Medial:– The term medial means towards the median plane.
f) Lateral:– The term Lateral means away from the median line.
g) Proximal:- The term proximal means near the trunk or the point or origin of a part.
h) Distal:- The term distal means away from the trunk or the point or origin of the part.
I) Palmar or volar:- The term Palmar or volar means palm of the hand.
j) Planter:- The term planter means sole of the food.
k) Interior:- The term interior means the inner side of the body.
l) Exterior:- The term exterior means outer side of the body part.
m) Superficial:- The term superficial means towards the body surface.
n) Deep:– The term deep means the inner to the body surfaces.
o) Supine:– The term supine means the patient lies on the back side.
p) Prone:- The term prone means the patient lies face down ( stomach and chest )
q) Erect:- The term erect means the patient sitting or standing in position.
r) Decubitus:– The term decubitus means the patient is lying down. The patient may be lying in any of the following position.
– Supine or Dorsal decubitus:- The patient lies on the back side.
– Prone or Ventral decubitus:- The term prone decubitus means the patient lies face down .
– Lateral decubitus:– The term Lateral decubitus means the patient lies on the side. The patient lies on right side is called Right lateral decubitus. The patient lies on left side is called left lateral decubitus.
– Semi – recumbent:– The semi recumbent means the patient is reclining, part way between supine and sitting erect
